The challenge was to design and build two speculative single-family homes in the Woodland Heights area of
Houston, about three miles from the central business district. Most homes in this area are bungalows built at the
turn-of- the-century. The goal for each home consisted of approximately 3,200 square feet of living space with
amenities such as porches, gourmet kitchens and large walk-in closets. The solution incorporates several
common elements that respond to the vernacular of the neighborhood, such as porches, long eaves, and plank
siding. The living/dining/kitchen/family rooms are connected with minimal walls, giving the feeling of a large
expansive space. Several smaller patio/sitting areas connect the homes with the outdoors.
