The challenge was to design/build a single-family home for a young family on a 5,000 square foot lot and also have
outdoors areas for entertaining. The solution consisted of a simple “sliver box” with living areas upstairs creating an
expansive loft space and bedrooms downstairs. Other key elements include extensive use of glass on the southern
exposure for passive solar heating during the winter months, minimal west side exposure, economical pine plank
flooring, and glass railings to visually connect all living areas with minimal obstructions. The patio/entry area
incorporates four decorative trees, giving a sense of an “outdoor room” and connecting the home with the garden.
